A survey of 2,099 women found that women who had experienced abuse reported more frequent use of sleeping pills and sedatives than women who had not been abused.

Profile of a Female Substance Abuser

  • Generally young to middle aged

  • Pressured to drink or do drugs by a peer group

  • Have a heavy drinking or drug using partner

  • Depressed

  • Experienced a life crisis or loss

  • Use drugs and/or alcohol to escape daily problems

  • Experienced domestic abuse

  • Experienced past/present sexual abuse
